There is a time of year when people already have their cards in hand: holiday budgets, discounts and gifts are all in the air… and the online stores that prepared do in a few weeks what others do in months. It is the famous peak season.
The bad news: you cannot improvise it. Stores that "jump in" a week before are competing against businesses that have spent months fine-tuning inventory, ads and shipping. The good news: if you are reading this with time to spare, you still have the advantage. Here is the full map 🗺️

The season map (so nothing catches you off guard)
Peak season is not one day: it is a chain of moments that starts in October and does not let go until January.
🎃 Halloween (late October)
The warm-up. Costumes, decorations, candy… but it is also the signal that consumers have entered "shopping mode". Even if your product has nothing to do with it, it is a good moment to start campaigns and capture emails.
🛍️ Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving)
The biggest shopping day of the year in the US, and every year a larger slice of it happens online. Many shoppers have already made their list before the day arrives, so your offer needs to be live, clear and easy to find early. If you also sell to Mexico, put El Buen Fin, Mexico's big sales weekend in mid-November, on your calendar too, and register your business at elbuenfin.org.
🖤 Cyber Monday (the Monday after)
The online-only second round. Watch out: do not burn all your inventory or all your ad budget in the first round. Many buyers wait for this second chance to compare. It is also a great moment for Small Business Saturday, which falls in between and favors independent shops.
🎄 Christmas (all of December)
The gift peak. Here the star is not the discount: it is delivery time. A customer forgives paying full price; they do not forgive a gift that arrives on the 27th. Communicate your "order today to get it before Christmas" deadline very clearly.
📦 January (returns and clearance)
The close of the season, when returns arrive and shoppers hunt for deals. It is a good moment to clear leftover inventory with markdowns and to turn holiday buyers into repeat customers.
How to prepare (what really moves the needle)
1.Plan your promotions ahead, calculator in hand.
Define what you will discount and by how much, and do the math so the discount does not eat your margin. A "30% off the whole store" without running the numbers is the perfect recipe for selling a lot and earning nothing.
2.Stock up early.
Selling products you do not have is the fastest way to turn your best season into your worst reputation. Review what sold most last year (or what you expect to move) and secure stock before your suppliers are saturated too.
3.Prepare your customer service.
In peak season the questions multiply: "will it arrive before Christmas?", "do you have it in size M?", "where is my order?" Fast answers = closed sales. Set up automatic replies for the most common ones and decide who answers what.
4.Make sure your store can handle it.
More traffic + a slow cart = lost sales. Check your site speed, make sure it looks perfect on mobile (that is where most people buy) and keep checkout to a few steps. Every extra second of loading is people leaving.
5.Lock down your shipping.
Confirm rates and times with your carriers (USPS, UPS, FedEx or others) for peak season (they are not the same as in April), and have a plan B if your main carrier gets overloaded. Publish realistic order-by dates.
6.Start your campaigns before everyone else.
The cost of ads goes up when everyone advertises at once. Whoever starts building audiences in September and October pays less per customer in November than whoever shows up to fight in the middle of the battle.
The mistake we see all the time
Thinking peak season starts when the discounts start. For the shopper it does; for your store, it does not. If the season kicks off in October, your preparation starts two or three months earlier: August is planning, September is fine-tuning, October is executing. A store that "prepares" in November is not preparing, it is putting out fires 🔥
