Before the pandemic we had the itch to have our own website, and one day we said: "That's it, this time we are going to do it right!" We looked for a company, we trusted them… and we ended up paying more than 100,000 pesos, well over US$5,000.
It is not that they were bad. But along the way we learned several things nobody tells you before you spend the money 💸. We are sharing them so you do not have to learn them the same way.
What nobody tells you
1.A pretty website is not a website that sells.
Looking incredible does not mean it converts. If it is not designed to guide the customer toward an action (buy, message, book), it is just an expensive brochure.
2.A website is not the same as an e-commerce store.
They are different things. A website informs; an e-commerce store sells, with a catalog, cart, payments and shipping. Paying for one when you needed the other is one of the most common mistakes.
3.People do not show up on their own.
Having the website ready is only the beginning. Without a strategy to attract traffic (SEO, ads, social media), your site can stay empty no matter how pretty it is.
4.A website needs constant maintenance.
A site that is published and abandoned loses rankings, performance and visibility over time. Keeping it healthy is not optional.
5.Watch out for timelines and hidden costs.
They took years to deliver ours. Always ask for realistic timelines and for what the price does include before you sign.
What to check before investing in your website
If you are about to hire someone, check carefully what you need before spending the money. This list helps:
